NaNo is an internet initiative to inspire writers to create a new 50,000 word novel in the course of one month. The idea is to create a brand new idea (not an existing project) at a rate of 1,667 words per day.
It’s an arduous undertaking (I know I write about 500 words an hour on average), but last year 200,000 people took part! That’s a lot words being produced!
